Summer Work

Summer Documentary Production work

-Talk to people you think you know and find out something you did not know about them.

My Dad told me about a car crash he was in when he was 11. He was on a trip with his Grandparents and was sitting in the front. He started to fall asleep so his Nan who was sitting behind him tried to prop a pillow behind his head, his Grandad who was driving tried to help but knocked the steering wheel and ended up going into a lamppost. There was no law on seatbelts so my dad smashed his face on the window screen. He still has scars on his face! The UK law for having to wear seatbelt came in for children in 1989 and 1991 for adults.

-Talk to someone you would NEVER normally talk to and get to know them.

I barely ever talk to taxi drivers and when I do it is usually about what I am doing etc. I made the effort to find out more about a taxi driver while on my way to work. He went to University in Ghana and studied law which is a side of Ghana you never hear about! On TV Ghana is nearly always showing the poor side of it and I have not seen any coverage about the more wealthy side! His story about what University is Ghana was like would be interesting to watch.

Media Production

We were told to buy a book called Media Production by David Hesmondhalgh for our second year, i have started to read this book and have found it really interesting so far! It reminds me of my A-Level sociology and mentions Marx’s view a few times. I loved sociology in the first year but we had to teach ourself in the second year because we had no teacher so it was pretty horrible. Marx said in this book the same thing he pretty much always says! This is the lower class suffer in a Capitalist society but it was related to how they could have no input into what they are shown in the media.

The part I have read so far is about what media system is best for the people. There are two media systems;

-Political economists where the media system is provided by the state and is based on Capitalism.

-Market Liberals were the influence of the state is limited and is more likely to preserve liberty of individuals.

Raymond Williams knew that there was a choice between the media, it was either controlled or free but he found 4 basic ways of communication. The first was autharitarian which is basically where the state controls everything. Any other ideas are excluded and it is all very one sided. This is like when Hitler was in power, he made a cheap radio called the Volksempfänger, AKA the peoples radio. He done this so poorer people in Germany could buy it and listen to the Nazi propaganda.

The second way is paternal. This is being ruled by a minority and has to go through sensorship rules before being released. This is most simular to our society.

The third way is commercial which is when anyone can release anything aslong as they can afford it!

The last way is democratic, this one confused me a bit but is pretty much from the people for the people. Williams says that new institutions like this need to be experienced and we all have the right to transmit and receive.

The 5oClock Show

I was lucky enough to get priority tickets to the 5oClock Show with Lenny Henry! I also got tickets for ‘The Cube’ but it was on at the same time so I chose to go and see The 5oClock Show. We arrived at the BBC studio in London at 3.30 and went in by 4. I was quite lucky to get priority tickets because it meant I had first entry so pretty much definitely had a place assuming you arrive on time! As we walked through the gates, there was famous people’s hands on the wall with their signature underneath, this was good to look at while we waiting to be led in. Once we were in the studio we were told where to sit. It was a lot smaller than i expected, the actual studio space was about the same size as the one at University and there was a lot less chairs than i expected.

We had someone tell us what we were going to be doing, basically clapping, woooing and laughing when we needed to! He was quite funny and entertained us until Lenny Henry came out to say hello. It was strange seeing someone so close that I only ever see on TV! I use to like watching his Lenny Henry Show. He was nice and said hello and thank you for coming and told a few jokes! He does seem like a genuinely funny person. We were told about the guests who were coming on, which was Jonah Hill, Michael McDonald, a woman called Dominique talking about her brothers murder, a nutritionist Amanda Hamilton, and Stacy Solomon. Good line up of people for us to see!

It was a live show and there were screens that we could see to see how it was being broadcast. I enjoyed watching the cameras in the studio, was crazy to see how much they moved, they only stayed still if their shot was currently being broadcast! Apart from that they were constantly moving around for the best shot. It was a lot less organised than I thought it would be, the floor manager did not do a proper count down, he only counted from three if that! It was more of a ‘Quiet, Point, GO!’ The guests were good, I am a fan of Jonah Hill, he is in some very funny films and he told a funny story! Stacy Solomon is funny, Lenny Henry joked about her laying off the coffee because she was so hyper and excited!

I really enjoyed going to the show, it was a good experience and I saw how the studio works for a live show! After this we went to a pub in Camden and Amy Whinehouse was randomly in there! It was a strange day for seeing famous people.

Summer

I recently received my summer work for my second year at Coventry University. It seems crazy to think that my first year of University is over. It has gone soo quick! I decided to create a separate blog for this year because my other blog is pretty full so thought it would be easier to navigate a second blog.

I have had a very busy summer, you can tell I am a student because I am taking any kind of jobs given to me! My friend Sarah and I did litter picking in the Milton Keynes National Bowl after the Progidy concert, it turned out to be pretty hilarious and we found lots of money on the floor :) Got chased by wasps, talked to some funny people, got a dirt tan and most of all, got paid well! We ached the next day though. I also cleaned some computers but all good money! This was aswell and doing holiday cover at the Jardines Pharmacy where I have worked for quite a while now!

Anywho, I have been doing a ‘photo of the day.’ I have been trying to take a few pictures each day and then choose my favourite and write what I done that day in the caption. I have been doing so much and I thought this would be a good way to keep track of what i have been doing! I have never done stop motion before so have also been playing around with that. I created a really rough hair clip one just for fun, it’s not very good but i was just messing around. I have just finished taking stop motion pictures of a Lego zoo, it will be a bit longer but my old computer which has the software on is so slow! It keeps skipping out a few of the pictures so I will have to upload it to youtube to watch it and then make any changes needed.

See pretty crappy, but was just a play!

I have watched so many films since being home, new and old ones! I have seen many of the new films that have been released, I have seen Toy Story 3, Inception, Karate Kid, A-Team, Shrek Forever After, The Expendables, Twilight, and am planning to see more new releases! I will write-up some reviews soon.

:)
